Copenhagen taxi or TAXA
The passengers are the late skindfabricant Bjørkring (black hat) and his cousin from USA
The driver is E Wilhelmson Tuure who was born in Finland
and he was interviewed 25 years later. after work at home in Neils Ebbesensvej.
A taxi firm was started in 1902 with a garage at Vesterbrogade 25 with some large electric cars, and he was one of 8 drivers, who learned to drive on tricycles with Cornelius Steffensen
That firm went bankrupt because the vehicles were too large and ran out of current too quickly.
Meanwhile before the bankrupcy three automobiles had been ordered from the H C Chrisitansen of the
Danks Automobilfabrik in Store Kongensgade
The bodywork was made in Denmark on a Renault chassis.
One Herr Harboe purchase the three cars but failed too
From him E Wilhelmson Tuure purchasd K900 (registration number) for 450 kroner and started as an owner driver.
There was no steering wheel just a tiller and the moter had a crank to start it.
.The radiator was under the car and the single cylinder engine under was the driver's seat.
¤ seats and a hood to close the car in rainy weather.
Heste-Druskykuskerne were malicious !
K900 broke down daily and lasted 2 years
The car was more "a novelty like aeroplanes today"
(about 1927 or 1929)
He got stuck on Lyngbyvej in the snow and had to get the passengers to push him free.
For 25 kr he was booked to drive some swedish journalists to the funeral of Christian ?? at Roskilde Cathedral but they arrived late because he broke down at Rødmølle (bread factory today) and the journey had to continue by horse power.
Speed was 15 to 20 km an hour.
He voices the universal complaint to this day - the customers say "not enough enough taxi's" and the drivers say "too many".
He sold K900 for 350kr. "it should have ended up in the Bymuseum"
His present car was a luxury Renault costing 10,000 kr and he works for or with Taxamotor taking orders by telephone
Now aged 61 the interviewee E Wilhelmson Tuure had started work at 430 am and finished at 400pm and has a daily turnover of 15 to 16 kroner (about 1929)
TAXAMOTOR started 3. June 1908 with 11 taxis driving out from the garage at Ved Glyptoteket 2-4.
TaxaMotor painted red and white on all the doors and the first DROSKECENTRALEN - telephone operated dispatcher's ioffice. telefonnummer 9001
and now 70 338 338
Today a Copenhagen day driver works 5 days a week from 6 00 am to 4 00 pm and has a turnover of 1800 to 2200 kr shared with the owner 50/50 as expenses and wages.
The modern taxi is typically a well maintained, less then 3 years old, Mercedes 4 door saloon with global positioning and digital dispatching and fleet control.
telephone 3535 3535
I had 25 years experience as a driver with them and a lot of fun - a good way to learn spoken danish too.
