The plan was to watch le Tour de France
but Denmarks Radio dr.dk is having a railway afternoon

Instruktion: Philipp Wohlleben.

Quite a fantastic experience for an old train spotter like myself'

<~>::Life As A Bog::~<>~::By Gob::<~>

from my email

I just read your entry dated Monday, May 17, 2004
,in your Blog "Viking" under the head "I like the
word Danglish!" and came away totally confounded,
in fact so much so, that I resolved to write to you.

You had started with an interesting rhetoric
"What is exactly the difference between
'at the window' and 'by the window' and then gone
on to quote a very lengthy extract from the
dictionary.

Well,I was may be crazy, because I actually
read the whole of it and in the end I had NO
clue as to why I started reading it in the first
place and lesser clue as to what was the answer
to the poser at the beginning.

So my question is :
What ,in the world, is the difference????

If you have some free time , do reply. The
puzzle is nagging me more than I want it to :S

Yes the question was put to me in the Mimir Club bar in Varðagøta
2, FO-100 Tórshavn
Faroe Islands Tourist Guide 2004

and I was just as gobsmacked as you.
as native speakers of english we learn at our mother's knee which form to use when

She was at the window
the girl and the window are interacting - you are looking in
or she is looking out.

She was by the window

the girl is located by the window but may have her back to it for example

it took me a look at the dictionary and 24 hours to sort it out

you and I do all this intuitively but when it comes to thinking about english as a foriegn language or ESL teaching we really have to think hard and go on some courses.
